If you don't know, I'm serving NS right now. I've been posted out to an artillery unit in Kranji. Head moderator is posted there with me too.
As we are the lowest ranking troops (the men), we are under the sargents, sargent majors, and officers. They have a lot of control over what we can do, what time we sleep, what time is our next activity, what is our next activity and so on. They are our leaders or in army terms, commanders.
They also scold us and discipline us with push ups. After a while, it's easy to see who is a good leader, and who is like by the men. We also can see who are really terrible leaders and we wonder how they even got to their position.
Some of them, make us do punishments for their entertainment. They literary make us run around for no apparent reason. They can also be fussy over the smallest of issues. They see a reason for such actions, although we do not. Even if there really is a reason, they would not explain it to us. These commanders are not just disliked but hated by the men. Their style of leadership does not seems to get us anywhere.
Some commanders are very good to us. They don't discipline us even though we know we did things wrongly or improperly. They help us get more time for ourselves, and less work to do. These commanders are very very well liked by the men. However, after a while, the men will misbehave in front of them. We will purposely let our discipline and work ethic slack while they are taking charge.
For one last group of commanders, their type is in between the first two groups. They discipline us, with a reason, yet try to give us what we want. They task us to work, but not work us overboard. This group of commanders are respected by the men. They are not perfect, but when at times when the men have to elect the commander to lead them, these few will be at the top of the list.
Do you see the linkage between army commanders and business managers? Leaders are everywhere, in every field, and in every expertise. The types of leaders that succeed, the leaders who are like tyrants, and the leaders who get nothing done, are the similar in every field, and every expertise.
If you are a leader, learn how to be a good one, and a successful one at that.
