Mentor for F&B Biz Please

Hi I'm Jude.

I've made a decision to myself that I am going to start my own business from scratch. I will be quitting my full-time "safe" job at the end of Oct 2010 (this year) to concentrate on how I will want to start something of my own. I do not have much capital and have not managed to find a mentor but I assure all of you that I am sincere and committed to becoming an entrepreneur.

I have gotten lots of advice from many people and welcome even more if anyone would care to share them with me. I'll be more than happy to meet up with anyone or be apprenticed to a mentor if I am deemed worthy. I have no illusions about this path that I have chosen and have accepted anything that comes my way. I only believe in success, failure is not an option.

I am working on starting a cafe/restaurant right now. The concept is not new and I know that 70% of such food places close within the first 2 years. I've also read recent news articles in the papers say that Singapore is in a food glut but I believe in being able to constantly evolve the business to avoid the death spiral.

It is my belief that businesses are about team work. I don't assume to know everything and if someone can bring in something that I don't have, then I will be ever grateful to that person. So if any of you would like to look into starting something with me, or feel that you would be kind enough to impart some knowledge or offer to mentor, please please tell me.

My dream is to make people happy through the things I do. Hopefully I will be able to help young entrepreneurs start up one day as well. The greatest gift of life is the ability to give back.

Starting an F&B business is not easy if you are not from this industry. We have been in IT business for more than 10 yrs.

We have just started a simple stall to sell cook food. To make it easier, we pay consultancy fees to learn the trick from someone. We pay lower than franchise, and we know the location is not a great location. Yet we do it to learn the F&B business so we can know the operations. We are targeting for operating break-even before we can start thinking of the bigger picture.

Just a word of caution, there are a lot of licensing to take care of. If you do cafe or restaurant, you need a shop license with quite a number of other licensing to take care of. You will also need to send your food handlers for food hygiene course etc. So do start reading up and preparing for it before wasting your money on rental as it will be the heaviest overhead.

I have over one month period started a new food store and help plan a cafe business for a new start-up. Though they have not started the cafe, but the planning is enough for the team to source for funding and ready to start off when the funds are available.

So if you need, I can share some of those information and experiences with you. Of course if you are keen, you can also join the team as investor as we would be opening for investor's talk soon.
