Subject: Any Pay to Play type of MMORPGs made by or in Singapore? Tue Jun 02, 2009 11:45 pm |

I just got off playing WoW, and it made me wonder.
For those of you who don't know. WoW, stands for Wolrd of Warcraft, a very popular online game (MMORPG). In the game you are a citizen of a fantasy world, you can do things in the game that you can't do in real life, like kill monsters. You can also interact with other people who play the game, citizens in the world, just like you.
To play the game, players have to play every month. Just to play, this is to cover the costs of running the servers that keep the game online and alive.
Now it's about S$22 to pay. Considering there are millions of players, in fact, just one million players playing a month. That's 22x1,000,000 = S$22,000,000. $22 million in just one month. The costs to keep the game up don't even go past 2 million.
I don't know who owns the company that runs the game, but he sure is wealthy. That is a lot of passive income.
I was wondering whether there are such games based in Singapore. If there isn't, someone who starts a Pay yo Play game here like WoW could be very wealthy indeed. Think of all the passive income.

Take IAHgames as an example
To maintain a MMO game and its server. It is not an easy as it seems.
First you need to either develop a MMO game or get its license to distribute the game.
It can be F2P or P2P. depend on it is like Maplestory or WoW. Different marketing strategy for either. Sure need GM to be around to stop bug abuser and other problem which will defame the game company capability to maintain the harmony of the gamer.
Second Life is also another way for netizens to buy and sell virtual stuff online.
Just my 2 cents

Its not an easy task but all the boss has to do is hire people with the 20 million to help him run his business. Then he still gets to keep 2 million a month. WOW!

I have seen the IAHgames.
The MMO games although hosted here and its local server being here, the game itself is not made in Singapore.
I wonder if any of the Singaporean game making companies will ever make a Singaporean MMO game. Whether free or pay-to-play, it would be fun. And they will make a lot of money if they know how to target properly. Even a simple game like Pirate King Online attracts so many people from Singapore.
Still a lot to learn from Taiwan and Korea.

The youngsters in Taiwan and Korea are different from youngsters here. Some of the world's best players come from Korea. They have loads of cybercafes there. And the youngsters there sometimes play until they literally drop dead. Singaporean kids are more concentrated academically. Look at them, piano lessons, school, tuition, swimming, family outing...Where got time to play?
